Muscadine Lines: A Southern Journal

John M. Valentine

Dead by road and night,
drunk driver.

Morning chapel:

how strange to find
this small bouquet,
this quiet cross,
in early buzz,
rushing traffic
scattering petals,

like absence
scatters eyes,

down the highway of the heart.

John M. Valentine is a professor of philosophy at the Savannah College of Art and Design. His poetry has been published in The Sewanee Review, The Southern Poetry Review, The Midwest Quarterly, Snake Nation Review, The Adirondack Review, and others.
