The Fluttering Curtain

Raud Kennedy

Night whispers ride the breeze
across the stale pillow to my ear,
breaths of a fading summer
from fallen leaves disturbed
by footsteps in the night.
I wake, muted anxiety rising
like the bubbles in a bottle of seltzer.
I’m afraid to stay in one place too long
for fear I might catch up with myself.
