Everyone’s a poet
at five a.m.
You can see them moving
about in the yellow
light of their kitchens,
setting things
on the stove, patting the dog,
doing the close-in
work required to get
the sound right, the conjunction
of words that
will start the day, the way
a romance once
started, with just a glance, just
that utterly dicey click.
